During his university studies he developed an interest in theater and later began to participate in theater competitions. After looking at his work in one of these contests, he invited Harpal Tiwana, a famous dramatist from Punjab, to join his theater group with an offer of Rs 150 INR.
Deputy commissioner, Mr. Kapoor, supporter of his theater group, provided him a job in the government. Naseeruddin Shah and he has become good friends during his performance at the National School of Dramatic School, New Delhi.

After Naseeruddin Shah old friends he was stabbed with a knife in a restaurant, Om Puri jumped on their table, the attacker arrested to prevent attacks, took him to the hospital in a police van and saved his life.
In 1975 he discovered a film for the promotion of children's rights, Chor Chor Chhup Jes Rabbi, which was worth 3,000 rupions. Her role as Lahanya Bhiku was praised in the Aakrosh movie 1980 by critics and won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Om Puri in Aakrosh. He won the National Championship for Arohan in 1982 and Ardh Satya in 1983. He was last seen in the film Ghayal Returns Sunny Deol in 2016. He has worked in more than 15 languages.
