He began his career in 1960. He is known for his work in South Indian films and in Bollywood. In 1964 he moved to the front of his "Tughlaq" work. His work as Swami's father in "Drop Days" in 1987 was highly regarded by spectators in Indian history.
After his return from England he met his wife during a celebration during his work at Madras at Oxford University Press. He married at the age of 42. He likes to write games, literatures, stories, poems, etc. written in Kannada and translated into English and some Indian languages.
He also taught at Oxford University Press, Chennai, from 1963 to 1970, and was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago, Illinois from 1987 to 1988. From 1974 to 1975 he was director of the Institute of Film and Television in India. and from 1988 to 1993, president of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, National Academy of Interpreting Arts.

In the 2014 parliamentary elections he was an opponent of Narendra Modi. He is a critic of religious fundamentalism and Hinduism in India. He gave his voice in the autobiography of the Wings of Fire book by the former president of India, A. P. Abdul Kalam.
