He was born in a stable next to the Versova garage, where his parents used to live. He lost his father at the age of 16, after leaving his course in Pune, returned to Mumbai to stay with his family and began to work as assistant director.
He started his career with assistant director Harnam Singh Rawail with Sunghursh 1968 with Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala and Sanjeev Kumar. At first he earned an INR 200 per month. Although he wants to become an actor and even wants to get good play opportunities, his performance career has not yet started.

In 1980 he created a production company called FilmKraft, of which the first film, Aap Ke Deewane 1980, was a failure at the box office, but the following film Kaamchor 1982 was successful.
His first debut, Khudgarz 1987, was a great success. His son Hrithik was not the first choice of his film Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai 2000, he wanted to sign Shah Rukh Khan for the film instead.
His movie title always begins with "K" because he sees it as an opportunity for him. His best friends in Bollywood are Jeetendra and Rishi Kapoor.
