Soon his parents began to call him by the same name. Strange enough, his father suggested that he would change his name officially after he left school. He is now called 'David'.
Initially, Dhawan did not intend to join the movie. However, when his older brother, Anil, asked for an interpretative course at FTII, he also thought of trying it out. So Dhawan participated in the same course and the same high school.
After spending a few months there, he realized that playing was not his cup of tea. As a result, he fell out of the middle term and chose a writing course.
The last actor, Om Puri, was his crew, but actor Naseeruddin Shah had a year. Dhawan fell as a gold medalist in a publishing house. His main purpose, however, was to become a director.

In the first years of his career, Dhawan worked as an informative editor for Bombay TV. Slowly and regularly he moves to adaptations with films such as Love Story 1981, Saaransh 1984 and Naam 1986.
In an interview he revealed that he thanked the actor Sanjay Dutt for all the success, because he only helped him take his first steps as director.
So far, Dhawan has produced more than 42 films.The director works with Govinda actor in no less than 17 films, most of which were blocks of blocks. He is a member of the prestigious Asian Academy for Film and Television.
