She left the school at the 12th level to start her performance. She started her career as a dancer in a tamil movie in 1961. In 1964, Tamil director, C.V. Sridhar asked why she was too thin. She appeared for the first time in a movie as a dancer in the 1963 movie tamil, Idhu Sathiyam.
Sapno Ka Saudagar, his first film in Bollywood in 1968, did not get good results at the Box Office.
She remained the highest paid actress of Bollywood from 1976 to 1980. She got the nickname of Dream Girl after playing a movie of the same name in 1977.
