He considers his uncle, Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and his father, Ustaad Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan as his inspiration, with whom he had previously attended concerts.
In 1985 he gave his first show at the age of 10 when Nusrat Fateh crossed Ali Khan in the UK. In 1995 he made his debut in Hollywood contributing to the film soundtrack, Dead Man Walking.

After the death of his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in 1997 he composed and sang several songs, but then could not be released. In 2002, when Pooja Bhatt traveled to Pakistan, she loved his song Mann Ki Lagan and interpreted it for his Paap film, so he debuted in 2003 in Bollywood.
In 2011, he had a car crash in the United States during his trip from Detroit to Chicago, where he was saved by a miracle.
