His father was a lawyer who died in an accident. He opened a small mechanical workshop in his hometown, Azamgarh, to support his family. Abu Salem attended a primary school in his village and left the town after level 12 and moved to Delhi, where he began to work as a taxi driver.
In 1985 he moved to Mumbai, where he worked as a bread-savior. In 1986 he began to work in a shop in West Andheri. In 1987 he became a real estate agent operating on the Arisa market in Andheri West.
In 1988 he appeared in a police station for the first time after he attacked a colleague for financial reasons. In 1989 he contacted Dawood Ibrahim and began to work as a driver for the D-company. He also began to provide weapons, money and illegal goods to various groups of Bombay, now in Bombay. He won the nickname "Abu Samaan".

In 1991 he married Samira Jumani, a 17-year-old girl. He is later divorced. In 1992 he delivered weapons to the famous Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt. Abu Salem played an active role in the bomb attacks in a series of serial bombs in Mumbai in 1993, killing more than 250 people and injuring more than 700.
In 1993 he left India to settle in Dubai and found a business called "Kings of Auto Commerce ". After receiving the support of his brother, Anees Ibrahim, from Dawood, Abu Salem wins the D-company.
