Khanna first sought to become an engineer; nevertheless his father accepted him to a business school to help him to promote the familiar business textile. He has never been interested in a commercial diploma and has thus begun to participate in other peripheral activities at the university, including the theater.
In the same period he fell in love with one of his comrades called Gitanjali. After a few months of dating, the couple decided to marry as soon as they found work. In an interview, Kanna revealed that his father never supported his decision.
When Khanna told his father that he wanted to act, his father showed a gun to him and said Khanna spirus, if he opposed his father's decision. His mother, however, intervened and finally convinced the "head of the family", provided that Kanna would not settle after two years and adhered to the family trade.

In a strange movement, Khanna left his performance in 1982 and became a disciple of a spiritual guru Osho. For this reason, he emigrated to "Rajneeshpuram", Osho Municipality in the United States, where he remained five years old and became his "gardener".
Fortunately for Khanna, less than a week after the launch of his first film, Mann Ki Baat, the actor had up to 15 film offers on the table. In July 2002, Khanna was appointed Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Union.
