When he came to India due to divorce, his family lived as a refugee in Vijay Nagar, Kingsway Camp, and moved to the old region of Rajendra Nagar in New Delhi. Very young, very inspired by Dilip Kumar and Ashok Kumar, so he decided to call himself Manoj Kumar.
However, his true name is Harikrishna Giri Goswami. Manoj Kumar's film career began in 1957 with the film Modo, in which he played an 80-year-old character. The patriotic image of Manoj Kumar was really recognized after the launch of the Shaheed film in 1965.
The film was based on the life of the freedman Fighter Bhagat Singh. After the Indo-Pak war in 1965, Lal Bahadur Shastri, then Prime Minister of India, asked him to make a movie inspired by the popular slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kissan.

After Kranti, his race of cinema began to capture because his films did not work well. Due to his many roles in patriotism, he received the nickname "Bharat Kumar". In 1989 he was the first Indian director to choose Pakistani actors. In 1992, the Indian government gave him the Padma Shri Prize.
In 1995 he stopped acting. He played for the last time in the 1995 Maidan-E-Jung film. In 2004 it was announced that Manoj Kumar adhered to Shiv Seine. In 2016, Manoj Kumar was rewarded for his continued contribution to Indian cinema through the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
