Wangchuk was then admitted to school a few kilometers away from his home. He could only spend several months there, but the linguistic teachers and students were not known to him.
In 1977, Wangchuk moved to Delhi, where he was admitted to Vishesh Kendriya Vidyalya, a free government regulated school school for children in border areas.
Although his father wanted him to become a civil engineer, Wangchuk chose for mechanical engineering. Regretting Wangchuk's decision, his father refused to pay school fees. Wangchuk then taught the tenth students to finance their technical course at NIT Srinagar.

In 2005 he was appointed member of the National Council for Primary Education of the Ministry of Human Resources Development of the Indian government. It is believed that the character of Aamir Khan, Phunsuk Wangdu, was inspired by him in the biggest film of 2009 - 3 Idiots.
In November 2016 Sonam Wangchuk received the "Rolex Awards for Enterprise 2016" for his "Ice Stupas" project. Many celebrities from Hollywood attended the award ceremony, which took place at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
Wangchuk received 100,000 Swiss francs 67 lakh and one of the most expensive clocks of the world with the incorporation of actress Michelle Monaghan.
