In an interview Vishal said that for a selection in the national cricket team, he traveled to Delhi, knowing that most of the national team's players came from Delhi. However, one day before an important interdenominational cricket match Vishal broke his thumb during practice.
As a result, he could not play this sport for a year. In order to add his misery, his father also died in the same year and Vishal never pursues his dream.
Vishal had a hobby on writing / songwriting; he composed his first song at the age of 17 years. When musician leader Usha Khanna listened to her composition, she decided to use it for the 1985 Yaar Kasam film. His older brother, who wanted to become a film producer, fought for years in Mumbai.

Also a fan of Ruskin Bond, Vishal has adopted many stories / books by Ruskin Bond in the films. While The Blue Umbrella 2005 is based on Ruskin's novel, Khoon Maaf is inspired by Susanna Seven Husbands.
His qualifying skills won him a national prize for the film: Ishqiya 2010. In addition, he received the UP Government Yash Bharti Award in 2016 for his great contribution to Indian cinema. Vishal Bhardwaj also gave music for the nominated version of The Jungle Book TV Series.
