His great uncle, Abul Kalam Azad, was a popular fight for freedom because he led the Khilafat movement and was a strong supporter of Mahatma Gandhi. He called his youngest son Azad Rao Khan in memory of his uncle.
His father's film productions were a failure for the majority that led to poor financial conditions. He said that about 30 calls a day from lenders asked for money and he still ran the risk of being dismissed from school because he did not pay any fees.
He loved balloons and kits in his youth. At the age of 8, he began his youth acting career in the film Yaadon Ki Baaraat, regarded as the first Bollywood masala film. In the same year he plays Mahendra Sandhu's younger role in the production of his father Madhosh.

When he was sixteen, he worked as assistant director with his friend Aditya Bhattacharya, a film of Basu Bhattacharya, in his silent experimental film titled Paranoia. To promote his film - Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, he went with his cousin and fellowmate, Raj Zutshi, to push the film on buses and Rickshaws in Mumbai.
To access the character of Bhuvan in his film Lagaan, he trap the ears to carry earrings in real time. On the other hand, his proud performance in Lagaan brought the movie to the Oscars.
When Farah Khan approached him to make a special appearance in Om Shanti Om's song, he refused to say he was a busy shooting and he could not buy time. In his success, DC, his character was attracted by Paul and ate about 10,000 during the running.
